It looks now that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moons challenger Shashi Tharoor would get the Congress ticket from Thiruvananthapuram. But this was only after some strong persistence by Tharoor, and against the partys general advice. The party wanted to field him from his home turf Palakkad. As per the partys calculations,he stood a good chance from there. However,Tharoor insisted on contesting from Thiruvananthapuram as he believed Palakkad was a Communist stronghold. Party leaders argued with him that three out of the seven MLAs in Palakkad were from the Congress and the constituency had a significant minority presence, but Tharoor refused to budge.
