Teen on joyride kills 74-yr-old

Mumbai: Has no driving licence; two constables injured

A 74-YEAR-OLD man was killed and two police constables injured after a speeding Honda City car driven by a 17-year-old rammed into them near Hotel Samrat,less than 50 metres away from Marine Drive police station on Wednesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Sampat Maroo,the founder of a steel trading firm,who resided in Ravindra Annexe building.

Investigations have revealed that the youngster did not have a driving licence and was on a joyride with his friend. He was detained by the police shortly after the incident and booked under Sections 279 rash and negligent driving,304 A causing death by negligence,337 causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others and 338 causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others of the IPC.

Later,the offender was produced before a court and granted bail on a bond.

The two constables,Yogesh Nijai 29 and Anish Keni 31,are both posted at the Local Arms Unit 3 of the Mumbai Police in Worli. While Keni escaped with minor abrasions to his abdomen and leg,doctors said Nijais condition is critical. He suffered fractures to his ribs and legs.

The boy is a Class XII student of Jai Hind College and resides in Tardeo. Sources said his father is a businessman and currently in Dubai.
