With tribals and activists questioning the Orissa governments decision to hold pallisabha in only 12 villages to determine the fate of Vedantas bauxite mining project in Niyamgiri, the Union tribal affairs ministry would send a team to assess the claims of other tribal villages in Kalahandi and Rayagada.
The pallisabha started last week and so far tribals and other traditional forest dwellers in five villages have thumbed down the project. Now,112 other villages around Niyamgiri want pallisabhas, arguing that they too would be affected by the proposed mining.
The Congress MP from Kalahandi Bhakta Charan Das has backed the demand.
The central team will comprise three tribal affairs ministry officials and Bhubanes-war-based activists Tushar Dash and Y Giri Rao. It will visit the two districts from August 4 to 8 and submit its report to the ministry within five days.
