Teacher assault: Family,CPM allege role of UDF leader

The victim,R Krishna Kumar,47,and his wife K R Geetha teach at a higher secondary school managed by Pillai, father of Forest Minister K B Ganesh Kumar.

The brutal attack on a school teacher at Kottarakkara in south Keralas Kollam district by unidentified assailants has snowballed into a major political issue with the victims family and the CPM alleging the role of senior UDF leader R Balakrishna Pillai, who has been jailed in a corruption case but admitted to a private hospital.

The victim,R Krishna Kumar,47,and his wife K R Geetha teach at a higher secondary school managed by Pillai, father of Forest Minister K B Ganesh Kumar.

According to police,R Krishna Kumar was found lying in a pool of blood on a road near Kottarakkara on Tuesday night. Kollam rural SP P Prakash said police could not record Kumars statement, who

is in a serious but stable condition.

The victim and his wife had a legal battle with Pillai after he appointed his nominee as the school headmaster, flouting the seniority norm. The victims wife moved the court and obtained a favourable verdict, forcing Pillai to make her the school head.

Geetha told the media that Pillai had threatened them after the court verdict. They had complained to the police but they did not take any action because of Pillais clout, she alleged.

However,Minister Ganesh Kumar, also a film actor, denied the allegation and said the real culprits should be booked.

Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan, who had a long legal battle against Pillai, alleged the tainted UDF leader had engaged a supari gang to attack the teacher, who had exposed several irregularities in the school run by the Kerala Congress B leader.

The Congress government has even challenged the Supreme Court, which served a one-year jail term on Pillai,by allowing him

to stay in a private hospital under petty excuses. Pillai had exhausted his parole period much before. Yet

he manages to elude the jail, alleged Achuthanandan, seeking Ganesh Kumars resignation to facilitate an impartial probe into the attack.
