The ruling AIADMK trounced its rivals in the Sankarankovil bypoll. Barring the winning candidate,S Muthuselvi, every other candidate lost their deposits.
In the bypoll necessitated by the death of MLA and minister C Karuppusamy,Muthuselvi garnered 94,977 out of the 1,59,772 votes polled, while DMK candidate J Jawahar Suryakumar came a distant second with 26,220 votes. MDMK came third and AIADMKs ally-turned-foe DMDK was pushed to fourth slot. Failing to obtain one-sixth of the votes polled, all of them lost their deposits.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was understandably elated by the result as it came amid a bitter spat between her and Opposition Leader Vijayakant of the DMDK,which led to a situation where both challenged each other inside the Assembly with the bypoll as the battleground. Jaya claimed the victory was a stamp of approval for her administration.
DMK president M Karunanidhi said the result was not surprising as this was a constituency that almost always stood with AIADMK.
