A tainted businessmans advertisement in Communist Party of India Marxist daily Deshabhimani,offering greetings to the party plenum,which pledged to root out evil tendencies and mafia links the leaders maintain,has snowballed into a major controversy casting shadow over the very intention of the rectification drive.
On Friday,Surya Group of Companies managing director V A Radhakrishnan gave a front page advertisement in Deshabhimani,offering greetings to the CPM plenum held in Palakkad. Radhakrishnan is facing several corruption cases in connection with business deals at public sector cement firm Malabar Cements Limited. Earlier this year,he was arrested in connection with the mysterious death of senior official at the MCL and his two wards. The official had become a target in the MCL after he exposed corruption worth Rs 373 crore. During Assembly elections in 2006,Radhakrishnan had also faced allegation of pumping money to defeat senior leader V S Achuthanandan at Malampuzha Assembly segment.
As Radhakrishnans greetings became a controversy,Achuthanandan said the party daily should not have accepted the businessmans advertisement. But,CPM central committee member and newspaper general manager E P Jayarajan justified accepting the advertisement.
