The special TADA court on Tuesday allowed CBI to drop certain charges against extradited underworld don Abu Salem in the 1993 serial blasts case.

A few charges under TADA,Explosive Substances Act,Arms Act and Explosives Act were dropped in view of the commitment given to Portugal. However,Salem will continue to face trial in the case.

CBI sources said the agency filed an application after the Supreme Court last week directed it to drop additional charges slapped on Salem after his extradition. The CBI sought the court’s nod to withdraw the charges that could attract jail terms of over 25 years, which violates the terms of the extradition agreement. Salem had moved the apex court seeking closure of his trials after the Portuguese supreme court terminated his extradition for “violation” of deportation rules.
