A P Abdullakutty, the MP who was suspended from the CPI(M) last week for asking the party-ruled Kerala to emulate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in attracting private investment, has now called the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) the only secular Muslim organisation. He was addressing a seminar on Muslim politics Kerala model, organised by Muslim Students Federation, the student outfit of the IUML,in Kozhikode on Friday.
Abdullakutty, who has shown interest in attending programmes organized by Muslim organisations after being suspended from the CPI(M) for a year, said the IUML has played a commendable role in stemming terrorism within the Muslim community. Extremist elements gained strength in the community when League got weakened,he added.
Sending feelers to Abdullakutty,League state secretary M K Muneer said his party would stand behind the MP if anybody tried to stop him from airing his views.
Though only a week has elapsed since his suspension,Abdullakutty had dropped enough hints that he would not return to the CPI(M). The day after his suspension,Abdullakutty once again raised his protest against the practice of bandhs. Last year, the party had censured him for speaking out against bandhs.
