Supporters rampage in Pune as candidate loses poll

Houses were vandalised,vehicles wrecked; even deities in people's homes were damaged.

A group of 40 to 50 goons,reportedly supporters of an Independent candidate who lost the civic election,went on a rampage in Sutarwadi area on Sunday night,vandalising houses,damaging 30 vehicles,including 10 cars and a police jeep,and injuring a policeman and two senior citizens. The police have arrested 13 persons,including a local NCP leader,who had supported the candidate.

The arrested persons have been remanded in police custody till February 22.

The rioting went on for around two hours and 20 households were vandalised. A police patrolling team was attacked by rioters. A constable suffered injuries on his forehead. After this,additional force and personnel from the Quick Response Team were sent.

According to eyewitnesses,around 50 persons carrying weapons,iron rods,wooden sticks and stones stormed the area,started damaging vehicles and breaking window panes. Shakuntala Ranpise,a senior citizen,said,“I was sleeping when the goons broke in. They snatched my gold chain and twisted my arm. They scattered the idols of deities.”

“Many of them were drunk and were hurling abuses. We suspect this was done because I got the NCP ticket,” said Rohini Chimte,elected from Ward 10.

Local senior inspector Mahadev Chavan said,“We have arrested 13 persons,including Aaba Sutar,the rebel NCP leader. We have booked Sunil Langhi,the Independent candidate,but are yet to arrest him.”

Sutar has lodged a cross-complaint stating that his car was damaged just before the rampage.
