Soppy sentimental Bengali debut of Smriti Irani

Amrita marks the Bengali debut of Smriti Irani. Directed by Tapan Saha,the film has been produced by a big business house,I-Core,under the I-Core Films and Entertainment Pvt Limited banner. Though the film had a glitzy premiere,viewers were disappointed because Irani did not show up as she was reportedly injured in an accident. Maiti of I-Core said that he wanted to back a film with a storyline different from the sound and fury of contemporary masala films. We have stepped in to back Gautam Haldars new film Mukti starring Rakhee. We believe in strong stories. Amrita has a strong story and we backed it.

Amrita,named after the character Irani portrays,is a throwback to old Hindi films where the long-suffering wife bears every kind of oppression,right from the mother-in-law torturing her for her orphanage background through her aging husband bringing his skin-show secretary home to live with,to her wayward son landing up in prison. She responds with stoic silence. Nowhere is the Tulsi of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi evident through the film.

Is Irani happy with the debut? She did not turn up for the pre-preview function that had to be cancelled at the last minute. Weak storyline,indifferent music,lack-luster performances and bad direction has made Amrita a total washout at the box office.Will Irani do a Bengali film again? We cant say for sure.
