With members demanding censoring of “indecent” advertisements in the media,Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Tuesday told the Lok Sabha that while the government is serious about cracking down on offensive advertisements, there are limitations within which it has to work.

“We send advisories within limitations… I cannot issue a directive for action against any channel or newspaper,” said Soni, responding to a question by CPM member Susmita Bauri on indecent advertisements which demean women.

Bauri advocated the need for a “censor board” for advertisements with at least three women members. Soni cited instances when the government issued advisories. “At times,we have to face litigations against our advisories,” said Soni.

However, when Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj deplored the government’s “helplessness”,Soni retorted,“Neither do I feel helpless nor is the government helpless. If this is what you think, then it is your misunderstanding.”
