Over 36 hours after 22-year-old Rakshit Singh Meena, son of DIG Purnea range in Bihar Bachchu Singh Meena, died due to injuries sustained in a post-midnight brawl in a discotheque in Gangtok on Saturday night, the Sikkim Police have arrested seven persons, including a bouncer. After autopsy,Rakshit’s body was flown to Jaipur, where he belongs to,by the family on Sunday afternoon.

Superintendent of Police,East district,Manoj Tiwari said over phone that the CCTV inside the pub was not functioning.

“We have been able to identify a few persons based on the mobile phone video footage of some of Rakshit’s friends. Seven persons, including a bouncer, have been arrested,” he said. The arrested include Ugyen Namgyal,21,Loden Sherpa,32,Sonam Namgyal,31,Gurmey Wangchuk,35,and Bidhan Pradhan,32.

The SP said Rakshit is an engineering student of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) at Majitar,35 km from Gangtok.

He had come to Live and Loud,a discotheque in the city along with four other students at around 8.30 pm on May 18 to celebrate the birthday of one of them.

“Rakshit and his friends were among the 57 persons inside the overcrowded disco. There was a commotion with a group of local boys, which led to a fight that took place outside the disco at around 1.30 am. The boys from SMIT were beaten up by the other group, during which Rakshit sustained grievous injuries,” Tiwari said.

He said the exact reason for the commotion is not yet known. Majority of them in disco were women, including two foreigners. “In the absence of video footage from the defunct CCTV,we now have to depend on other sources, including some footage taken on mobile phones,” the SP said.

In the brawl,Rakshit reportedly first sustained injuries on his face and neck, and later on chest and abdomen due to which he fell on the ground. However, his friends instead of taking him to a hospital, took him back to the hotel.

There he writhed in pain and started vomiting blood at around 6 am. He was taken first to SNM Hospital and then to the Central Referral Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. SMIT when contacted refused to talk about the incident.

Rakshit’s father,Bachchu Singh Meena,an IPS officer, belongs to Rajasthan. He has two daughters and lives with his wife in Purnea.
