At least six Naxal Dalam members were killed in an encounter in Etapali tehsil of Gadchiroli district Sunday, with the police claiming a major success. A lot of arms and ammunition and Naxal material were reportedly recovered from the spot.
Police had information about Naxal movement. So we had launched a combing operation for the past three days, with the local C-60 commandos and CoBRA personnel patrolling the area. The encounter ensued between a group of about 20-25 Naxals and three C-60 parties around 10.30 am and went on for about an hour. We have collected six dead bodies in Naxal uniform all of whom are women. We suspect there were more casualties, Special Inspector General of Police (Anti-Naxal Operation) Anup Kumar Singh told The Indian Express.
The encounter took place in the jungle near Sewari village. Sources said the Naxals dumped at least two bodies in the Bande river while crossing it to escape to the other side to nearby Chhattisgarh.
The identity of the Naxals could not be immediately confirmed. The bodies were being brought to Gadchiroli till late in the night. With this, the number of Naxals killed in the district this year has gone up to 23.
Seven Naxals were killed at Govindgaon in January in an encounter, followed by five at Bhatpar, four at Sindesur in April and one at Hetalkasa in May.
