In the light of China mysteriously recasting the length of its border with India, senior BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha on Sunday said the absence of a proper and equal response from New Delhi to such cartographic aggresions from Beijing in the past has emboldened China and suggested that India should respond in kind this time around.
Sinha pointed out that if China has indulged in this kind of cartographic aggression, there is no reason why we should also not do it.
There are areas which China claims as its own and which we have always shown as part of the Chinese territory. There is no reason why we should not show it as somebody elses, he said noting that India should use reciprocity as an instrument of diplomacy.
He was reacting to The Sunday Express report about China knocking off some 1,600 km from its definition of border with India.
Such kind of cartographic aggressions have been part of the Chinese policy and in the absence of proper and equal reply from our side, they have been doing what pleases them, he told The Indian Express.
Sinha, who has always been very vocal against Chinas aggressive tactics, said Beijings policy consistently has been to pin-prick India so that we are not sure of our ties with them and they take advantage of this uncertainty that they create. India unfortunately has been lacking in a proper response. We should respond in kind, he said.
He said reciprocity as an instrument of diplomacy has rarely been used by India. On this count,Indian diplomacy has been very weak. We dont respond in kind. It also applies to the US. The Americans strip-search our Ambassador, but we dont even put them (US envoys) through the normal searches here. The message should be if you treat us in a particular way,we will treat you in the same way, he added.
