As if his three events in rifle shooting where he takes aim when kneeling, lying down and standing weren’t enough,Gagan Narang devised yet another little game to check his precision.

On the eve of his 10 m air rifle event,he instructed his mental trainer Vaibhav Agashe to sit across him with mouth wide open as he flung dry fruits into the open and increasingly aching cavern.

On Monday, the targets were quite conservative — a bulls-eye 10 metres away, which he struck 26 times before he made his first error and shot a 9,on way to winning a deserving bronze medal.

His podium opened India’s account after two disappointing days of performances.

It was a satisfying

culmination of four years of the talented shooter teaching himself to forget the pain of narrowly

missing out on the final at Beijing.

In a reversal of roles from Beijing four years ago, however,Abhinav Bindra crashed out of the competition in the qualification round.
