Sheila unveils roadmap for city, promises double-decker flyovers

Holding areas called Shramik Ashray Kendra would be constructed for workers.

Unveiling the party’s roadmap for the capital if voted back to power in the Assembly elections,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday promised double-decker flyovers, monorail and trams to decongest Delhi’s roads.

“Holding areas called Shramik Ashray Kendra would be constructed for workers. Under the revised Kabil Laadli programme,an additional amount of Rs 50,000 would be spent on skill development of the girl child after she clears school education. To make Delhi a slum-free city,in situ development and resettlement of slums would be taken up apart from constructing a large number of dwelling units. A large number of public conveniences will also be constructed in every Assembly segment,of which 20 would be constructed exclusively for women,” Dikshit said.

Accusing the BJP of politicising the issue of unauthorised colonies,Dikshit said during BJP’s rule, not a single colony was regularised and no money was spent on development in unauthorised colonies. “We regularised 895 colonies in one go and spent over Rs 4,000 crore on developmental works and another Rs 645 crore is to be utilised during the current financial year. The Congress government has also started conferring ownership rights in 45 resettlement colonies,” she said.

Challenging the BJP,Dikshit said the BJP should come forward with proof before levelling corruption charges against the city government. “This is an open challenge to the BJP. Nobody has been able to come up with corruption charges against any minister and the government during the last 15 years,” she added.

Reacting sharply to a hoarding of the BJP purportedly stating that the state government could not stop rapes in the city and that the Congress government should be changed, the Congress hit back. “During Harsh Vardhan’s tenure as minister,he could not stop such an incident…,” Haroon Yusuf said.

Also present with Dikshit were Arvinder Singh Lovely and Raj Kumar Chauhan, besides Yusuf. “Had the BJP not displayed such a hoarding,we would not have cared to remind people of the past. We believe in dignified politics as well as election campaign,” Lovely said.

“If BJP has not been able to run the administration of three small municipal corporations, how will it be able to manage the capital city? Due to the inefficiency and callousness of the MCDs,Delhi has witnessed more than 5,000 cases of dengue,” Chauhan said.
