Amid speculation about her entry into electoral politics,President Pranab Mukherjees daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee Monday said she was not averse to politics but added politics was about much more than contesting elections.
Sharmistha, who is said to be interested in taking the political plunge, addressed a series of election rallies in Delhi indicating perhaps for the first time that she was ready to don a new mantle. An acclaimed Kathak dancer, she has been parrying questions about her entry into politics so far.
I belong to a political family. How can I be averse to politics, Sharmistha was quoted as saying by agencies to a question on whether her campaigning for the Congress indicated that she was not averse to joining politics. Sharmistha had campaigned for her brother Abhijeet Mukherjee when he contested the byelections from Jangipur after the seat fell vacant after Pranab Mukherjees elevation as the President.
Sharmistha said she campaigned for Congress because she belongs to the Congress family. Besides, she felt that it was her duty as she felt Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has done a lot for Delhi. She accompanied the CM and shared the dais with her before addressing street corner meetings along with Congress general secretary in-charge of Delhi Shakeel Ahmed. She addressed meetings in Laxmi Nagar and Gandhi Nagar constituencies.
Sharmistha is learnt to have spoken both in Bengali and Hindi, with party leaders introducing her as the daughter of a veteran Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee.
