Jamp;K police have charged Abdul Ahad Jan,who threw a shoe at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, with sedition, his lawyer Mudassir Gulzar said on Monday.
Jan was booked under Section 124-A of Ranbir Penal Code. This comes under sedition, Gulzar said. Jan will apply for bail on Tuesday.
Jan was produced before Magistrate Masarat Ruhi, who remanded him in five days police custody. Jan cried in the court and complained to the magistrate that he was tortured in custody. He also told the court that he was being pressurised to implicate separatist leaders or a particular mainstream political party for the crime,Gulzar said. Jan told the court that he threw the shoe out of his own volition and because of his anger about the prevailing situation. He said he is a son of the soil and was angry about the ongoing killings, the lawyer said.
Police had claimed that Jan told them he was incited by a mainstream politician.
Jan has become a hero with the angry youth in the valley. Soon after he hurled the shoe, people swarmed his house at Ajas,Bandipore.
Separatists too have hailed Jan. Hurriyat chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani said he saluted Jans courage. Dukhtaran-i-Millat chief Asiya Andrabi has said Jan represented the sentiments of the oppressed Kashmiris.
