Questioning the high security cover being provided to former ministers, the Supreme Court on Monday stayed a directive to give category Z security to two former BSP ministers in UP.
Everyone is equal before the Supreme Court. It does not matter whether he is a minister or a common man because Article 21 applies uniformly to all and everybody needs protection for life and liberty, said a vacation Bench of Justices A K Patnaik and Ranjan Gogoi.
Issuing notices on an appeal by the Uttar Pradesh government, the apex court stayed the order passed by the Allahabad High Court, which had directed the state to provide Z security cover to former energy minister Ramveer Upadhyay and former tourism minister Vinod Singh within 24 hours.
The petition, filed through advocate Ravi Prakash Mehrotra, had contended that there was no grave security threat to the duo and also that they were not entitled to the Z-cover. Z category entails a security cover of 26 personnel.
