Observing that for national and state-level parties symbols would not be disturbed, the Supreme Court on Friday directed the Election Commission (EC) as “an interim measure” to allot Praja Rajyam (PRP),Lok Satta parties and the DMDK a uniform poll symbol for the ensuing elections.

Appearing for the poll panel, senior advocate Ashok Desai opposed the parties’ contention for a uniform symbol on the ground that they could not claim “exclusivity” over a particular symbol.

Disagreeing with the counsel’s opinion,a bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam directed the EC to allott common symbol to the three parties.

The PRP floated by Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi wants rail engine, the DMDK led by Tamil actor Vijaykanth a nagada (musical drum) and Lok Satta a whistle as their poll symbols.
