Suspected militants shot and wounded a sarpanch in north Kashmir on Friday.
The assailants fired at Khazir Muhammad Parray,45,of Krankshan,Sopore,as he walked out of a mosque after afternoon prayers. He took a bullet to his chin.
He has been admitted to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar for treatment and his condition is stable now, a police spokesman said.
Khazir is associated with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
Suspected militants have targeted several panchayat members, killing six of them, across Kashmir since they were elected in April 2011. In January this year, sarpanch Habibullah Mir was shot dead in Sopore.
The All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference condemned the attack on Parray and pinned the blame for it on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The responsibility for the killing of the panchayat leaders lies with the chief minister, who has failed to protect the panchayat leaders despite their requests for security cover, the conferences chairman Shafiq Mir said and demanded dismissal of the National Conference-led government.
