Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh was in critical care in Lahores Jinnah hospital with serious head injuries after six inmates of Kot Lakhpat jail allegedly attacked him Friday.
Hospital chief executive Mahmood Shaukat said Sarabjit was critical. He said Sarabjit had several deep head injuries,and was breathing artificially with an endotracheal tube. Doctors have been unable to operate on him due to internal bleeding.
The government has constituted a high-power medical board to treat Sarabjit. The Indian mission has requested consular access to him.
The main suspect in the attack is learnt to be Amer Aftab,also a death row prisoner,who had quarelled with Sarabjit a few days ago. At around 4.30 pm,Aftab and others snatched the key of Sarabjits cell from jail wardens and hit him on the head and face with bricks and slashed his neck and stomach with blades and sharp pieces of a ghee tin,sources said.
Sarabjits sister Dalbir Kaur said he had expressed fear that he would be attacked by the jail inmates who had been threatening him ever since the hanging of Afzal Guru and Ajmal Kasab.
