A BSF personnel was injured as Pakistani Rangers, after a lull of nearly three months, resorted to unprovoked firing in Samba sector along the International Border on Monday morning.
The personnel, who had a bullet wound in his abdomen, was identified as Constable M Baswaraj,BSF spokesman Vinod Yadav said. He was hospitalised and his condition is now stable,he added.
Yadav said Baswaraj was on duty at the Katao outpost when he was sniped from across the border at 11:30 AM. This was followed by heavy fire from the Pakistan side. The BSF retaliated and the exchange continued till 12:15 PM.
Mondays firing has been the forth incident of a BSF personnel being injured by sniper fire this year.
Following the exchange, the J&K police launched searches in the nearby Mangu Chak area to look out for any terrorist group that may have sneaked into the Indian territory using the firing as a diversion. The search was still in progress by the evening.
Pakistani troops had also resorted to mortar shelling in Mendhar sector on Sunday night.
