Runaway couple dragged out of home,mercilessly beaten on street near Chandigarh

A young runaway couple living in a rented one-room accommodation was attacked late Sunday night.

High drama was witnessed at Burail village,Sector 45,late on Sunday night when a group of people attacked a young runaway couple living in a rented one-room accommodation here.

Both the man and girl,hailing from Alamgirpur village in Meerut,Uttar Pradesh,had been staying in the village for the past few days. They had run away from their village on March 31.

According to the preliminary investigations by the police,a group of people wearing white kurta-pyjamas and sporting beards barged into the house and attacked the couple. The group dragged the couple out of the house and thrashed them mercilessly in full public view. The man,identified as Rashid Ali,was left unconscious and later rushed to hospital by the police.

ASI Amrao Singh of PCR who took Rashid Ali to GMCH-32 said,“We got information about 9.46 pm and reached here in some time. The boy was unconscious and was admitted to the hospital. His condition is critical,and chances of survival are bleak.”

Rashid,a sepoy in the Rajput Regiment,told the police that he had taken leave for getting married.

The girl,Sitara,was also admitted to GMCH-32 in a critical state. According to eyewitnesses,the girl was dragged in the village for about 200 metres before the agitated mob,purportedly her parents,hit her head repeatedly against the road and thrashed her badly. A pool of blood was found on the spot from where the police picked her up in a semi-conscious state and admitted her to the hospital. She told the police that she was a graduate and got married to Rashid a few days ago against her parents’ wishes.

Rashid’s father Mohabbat Ali,who was found with the couple,was also badly beaten up and was admitted to GMCH-32. His condition was also stated to be critical.

The police had arrested three persons,including girl’s father Hasmat Ali.

“I traced my son’s location in Chandigarh. Hasmat and his family brought me here with them and used me as a bait to get to my son. The moment they found him,they all thrashed him mercilessly and didn’t even spare me,” said Mohabbat Ali.
