Police suspect the constable allegedly raped on Wednesday night may have been specifically targeted by her attackers posing as robbers. The woman said she has suspicions she had seen one or two of her attackers earlier.

The incident took place when the woman and her relatives were going from Ranchi to Garhwa with the body of the woman’s brother-in-law,killed in Ranchi on August 20. They were waylaid 12 kilometres ahead of Latehar.

Medical tests on the woman, however, did not provide conclusive evidence of rape. Police detained five people on suspicion but no one has been arrested yet.

There are clues leading police to suspect she had been singled out to be targeted, the most obvious being no truck that halted at the roadblock were looted.

“The truck drivers ran away leaving their mobile phones in their vehicles; the men did not even take them. They took money only from the constable’s family,” said a police officer.

Eyewitness accounts point to the possibility that the men were posing as highway robbers and waiting for the woman’s vehicle. Policemen recovered the woman’s gold chain about 25 metres from where her Mahindra Bolero had stopped. The woman’s gold earrings and necklace were not robbed. Her younger sister and mother, who were in the car, were not attacked.

The men seemed aware of the woman’s movements. “We suspect a pickup was following the woman’s car. When it was halted at the roadblock, the pickup parked itself behind the Bolero…,” said an officer.

One of the angles of probe is whether the attack has anything to do with compensation the woman received after the death of her husband in 2011. Her husband,a constable, had died when Maoists blew up a Mine Protected Vehicle in Latehar in an attack on the convoy of MP Inder Singh Namdhari.

“She is sitting on Rs 60-70 lakh and told us many people want to have that money…,” said an officer.
