Thousands of railway workers will march from New Delhi station to Parliament Street on Wednesday to demand adequate budgetary support from the Centre to the Indian Railways in the wake of a rollback of fare hike effected last week.

The All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF),the largest of the five federations of unions in railways, said around 12,000 men and women have arrived in Delhi to join a gathering of another 12,000 protesters to put up a formidable show of strength.

“We want the government to provide adequate budgetary support to railways because the national transporter is facing a financial crisis and passing through a very critical stage,” said AIRF general secretary Shiv Gopal Mishra.

While all five unions had appealed to the PM to support fare hike, only the AIRF is taking part in the protest march on Wednesday.
