The Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS) has done a U-turn on its earlier stand of not contesting elections. Two of its leaders plan to contest the Lok Sabha polls, with the BJP backing them. Sources in the BJP said the party has almost decided the names of former SAYSS convenor Leela Karan Sharma for the Jammu-Poonch seat and SAYSS spokesperson Jitender Singh for the Doda-Udhampur seat.
This has led to a revolt within the party with some 50-odd workers protesting against the move at the partys office here on Sunday.
BJP councillor Subash Jandial, said,The high command has ignored the party leaders and given preference to outsiders. We have been with the party for the last 30 years and now,the party has decided to field those who are not even BJP members.
BJP Yuva Morcha member Vikas,a resident of Reasi, said they have demanded ticket for youth leader Anil Gupta, son of BJP MLA Chaman Lal Gupta, for the Doda-Udhampur seat.
BJP state president Ashok Khajuria, who reached Jammu on Sunday evening after attending a series of meeting with the partys senior leaders over ticket distribution, said,The final names for Jammu-Poonch and Doda-Udhampur Lok Sabha seats will be announced on Monday. He even dismissed todays demonstration at the party office as not a BJP protest.
Anil Gupta said he was still in the race to get a ticket for the Doda-Udhampur seat and was waiting for the partys final decision. Jitender Singh,on the other hand, declined to comment and said he had not received any intimation from the party high-command.
Leela Karan Sharma, who resigned from the post of SAYSS convenor on Saturday in order to contest the Lok Sabha polls, said he was waiting for the party to make a formal announcement.
