The BJP Friday said the government has no right to claim diplomatic victory on the return of the two Italian marines, facing trial in India in connection with the killing of two fishermen off the Kerala coast.
It is not a diplomatic win,but a victory of the Supreme Court. Had it not been Supreme Court pressure, the government would have continued with an appeasement policy towards Italy. After the Supreme Courts pressure, the government had no other option, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said on the return of the Italian marines that diffused the diplomatic stand-off between the two countries.
Hussain said that External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid should desist from projecting it as a diplomatic win and suggested that he should claim diplomatic victory if he could bring back 1993 Mumbai blast accused Dawood Ibrahim.
Khurshid is taking credit for this. Mastermind of the Mumbai blasts Dawood Ibrahim is still in Pakistan. Why does he not bring them back? Even the Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed is there. Government should bring them back, Hussain said.
Hussain also slammed the governments assurance of no arrest and no capital punishment to the Italian government for securing the return of two Italian marines. The government has no right to decide the quantum of punishment,it is for judiciary to decide. If we left these kinds of things to UPA government, they will exonerate all the corrupt, he said.
But the party refrained from criticising the government on its stand at UNHRC over the US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka on the issue of human rights. There is no question of a difference with the government on the issue of foreign policy, he said, replying to queries on BJPs position on Indias vote against Lanka.
