Although an undercurrent of communal tension continues to grip Dhubri district in western Assam following the desecration of a Kali temple on September 7 in the heart of the district town,a retired Muslim teacher has come forward with a donation of Rs 5,000 for repair of the damaged temple.

Abdur Rashid,a retired teacher of the Rashtrabhasha Hindi LP School in Dhubri, made the donation on Thursday after local municipal board chairman Hemabrata Mazumdar made an announcement of Rs 6,000 for the same.

“I think it is very important for people of both communities to maintain peace and harmony during such situations created by miscreants taking advantage of the situation,” said Rashid.

Muslims comprise over 75 per cent of the population in Dhubri, which shares about 122 km international boundary with Bangladesh.

“We have read in newspapers about several persons including some from the Muslim community coming forward to donate towards repair of the temple. But such donations will be accepted only after the temple committee takes a formal decision,” said Uttam Seal, secretary of the temple management committee.

Meanwhile,a group of Muslims from Sivasagar have also announced their willingness to donate for reconstruction of the Dhubri temple.
