After nine months, the J&K police lifted restrictions around the house of hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

He had been under house arrest since March this year.

“The news of Geelani’s release was conveyed to us late Monday evening by a DSP,’’ Hurriyat Conference (G) spokesman,Ayaz Akbar, said.

Akbar said the police officer who conveyed the news did not explain the reasons behind Geelani’s release.

Around 30 policemen had been stationed around Geelani’s house at Hyderpora locality on the city’s outskirts.

“A temporary settlement of police outside Geelani’s Hyderpora residence was shifted at Monday night that existed there since July 2010,’’ he said.

Speaking about the party’s future programme Akbar said,“Geelani will resume his political activities from November 1 when he will address a public gathering in his hometown Sopore and will later visit Afzal Guru’s house,” he said.
