Orissa Woman and Child Development Minister Pramila Mallick on Saturday resigned from the Cabinet in the wake of allegations by opposition Congress and BJP over the Rs 700-crore scam related to purchase of dal for mid-day meal scheme and supplementary nutrition programme (SNP).
Mallick, who also heads the women wing of the BJD,resigned soon after she met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik this morning. I have tendered my resignation on my own on moral grounds in the interest of the party and to maintain the clean image of the government. I was waiting for the report of the state vigilance department and once I was told about a clean chit to me,I quit, Mallick said.
Three IAS officers too have faced action in the scam. While Balasore collector Manish Verma was transferred, former collector of Mayurbhanj and state director of National Rural Health Mission Dr Pramod Meherda and collector of Deogarh Ambika Prasad Mishras names have been recommended for departmental proceedings.
The vigilance department had,in test checks in some areas last week, found pulses supplied to schools for mid-meal and SNP schemes substandard. It also found that a private supplier sold dal to anganwadi centres and schools at double the price.
