The police have initiated investigation into an anonymous letter threatening to attack the Arthur Road Central Jail if actor Sanjay Dutt is lodged there. The letter was sent to the prison by post, and the police were informed about it by the Prisons department.
According to police sources, the letter was received on Monday. The eight-page letter, which was handwritten in Hindi, said the prison would be attacked the day Dutt is sent there. The Arthur Road authorities immediately forwarded the letter to the office of Inspector General (Prisons) Vinod Lokhande.
Lokhande, when contacted, confirmed that an anonymous threatening letter had been received. We have informed the Mumbai Police about it, he said.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Central region) Praveen Salunke confirmed that the letter mentioned a threat pertaining to Sanjay Dutt.
I received a letter about the incident, along with the threatening letter, from the Prisons department this morning, and have forwarded it to Deputy Commissioner of Police of Zone 3 as well as the NM Joshi Marg police station. They will be taking further action on the matter, said Salunkhe.
Security at the Arthur Road prison has been increased following the incident. The jail also houses high security prisoners like Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal,an important terror accused allegedly involved in the 26/11 attacks of 2008,as well as several other terrorist attacks in Maharashtra.
