The Congress has begun preliminary discussions to choose a successor to Kripashankar Singh as chief of the partys Mumbai unit, but a final decision will be taken only after the UP polls, sources said on Thursday.
Some obvious names have emerged, said a senior Congress leader. After polling in UP is over on March 4,senior leaders will take stock of the Mumbai scenario.
A review of the partys unexpected rout in the just-concluded Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections will also be undertaken soon.
The frontrunners to replace Kripashankar include MP Priya Dutt, former Mumbai Congress chief Gurudas Kamat, now an MP,and a handful of MLAs. Priya Dutt is an acceptable face to all communities, she is popular among Maharashtrians, north Indians and other communities, said MLA Krishna Hegde,a Dutt supporter.
Others believed to be in the fray are legislators Bhai Jagtap,Madhu Chavan and senior leader Amarjit Singh Manhas. Names of MP Sanjay Nirupam and MLA Rajhans Singh are also being discussed.
