Posco: Officials not allowed to enter village

After two weeks of smooth land acquisition for Posco’s 12-million tonne steel plant in Jagatsinghpur, the district administration faced massive protests at Dhinkia.

After two weeks of smooth land acquisition for Posco’s 12-million tonne steel plant in Jagatsinghpur, the district administration faced massive protests at Dhinkia, the epicentre of anti-Posco protests,as hundreds of children and women prostrated, preventing the entry of police and land acquisition officials.

The land acquisition drive started on May 18 and so far,the district administration has acquired about 1,300 acres in Nuagaon and Gadakujang grampanchayats. But the district administration faced opposition from the anti-Posco group,Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti,at Dhinkia as 20 platoons of armed police could not dissuade the protesters. In Dhinkia alone, over 1,600 acres of forest land are under betel vine cultivation which the administration plans to acquire.

Nearly 2,000 villagers, who have barricaded themselves at Dhinkia and Gobindpur for the past two days ,on Friday made the children and women their first ring of defence. “The children would oppose the entry of armed police. If the government wants to acquire the land,it has to tread over the children and women,” said Abhay Sahoo, president of PPSS.

He added that 500-odd children had formed the Bal Sangharsa Bahini to protest against the land acquisition process

Despite their best efforts ,the administration could not enter Dhinkia.
