Three undertrials were shot dead and two others were injured this afternoon when a police van returning them to jail after a court appearance was intercepted by at least 15 armed men some 40 km from Gurgaon. Two policemen also sustained bullet injuries in the attack being blamed on gang warfare.
The assailants,who came in three cars,fled with a carbine and an INSAS rifle that they snatched from the policemen.
The incident took place at 3.45 pm on a stretch of road in the Dulina police post area of Jhajjar district of Haryana. The undertrials were being returned to Bhondsi jail after a court hearing in Rohtak.
Police said a hijacked truck first rammed the police van and then three cars blocked its path. As it came to a halt,armed men emerged from the cars and opened fire.
Four of them got into the van and fired. Three undertrials Sri Bhagwan,his brother Dilbag and Anil Fauji were gunned down. Two others,Naseem and Ranbir,sustained injuries, an officer of the Dulina police post said.
P R Singh,Jhajjar SP,said the police personnel,escorting the undertrials,returned fire. Head Constable Vinod and Constable Vikas sustained bullet injuries. The injured have been admitted to the PGIMS,Rohtak.
Police said Sri Bhagwan and his associates were arrested last year for their alleged role in the Fauji Dhaba murder case. It is suspected that they were targeted today by the rival Chippi gang.
