Police book UAE citizen for marrying minor girl

The case was registered after the SHRC directed the state police chief to submit a report.

A UAE national,who forcibly married a 17-year-old girl,has been booked by the police along with nine others amid outcry over the menace of forcing minor Muslim girls into wedlock.

UAE national Jasim Mohammed Abdul Kareem,his mother and the authorities of the Kozhikode-based orphanage have been booked under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act,2006,the Juvenile Justice Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act,an official said Tuesday.

The plight of the minor girl came to light after she approached the Child Welfare Committee saying the orphanage authorities where she was staying forced her to marry the man on June 13.

Kareem returned to his country on July 1. The case was registered after the SHRC directed the state police chief to submit a report.
