Perks for former governors for life amid Bills cleared

Two Bills had to be left for the next sitting due to time constraints.

Sitting specially for this purpose on a Saturday,the Lok Sabha passed three Bills today. Two Bills had to be left for the next sitting due to time constraints.

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Orders (Amendment) Bill,2012,and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Second Amendment) Bill,2012,both of which seek to modify SC,ST lists in a number of states,got the nod of the Lok Sabha.

Another Bill,the Governors (Emoluments,Allowances and Privileges) Amendment Bill,2012,which grants secretarial staff and other privileges to former governors for life,was also passed without a glitch.

Senior BJP leader L K Advani and Congress president Sonia Gandhi were among those present in the sparsely attended House.

Responding to the debates on the two SC/ST-related bills,the government said talks were on with the private sector to introduce reservation in private companies. It also announced that a mechanism to streamline and monitor the flow of central ministries’ funds for the welfare of tribal areas was being worked out.

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Orders (Amendment) Bill,2012,modifies the current list of SCs in four states,including Orissa,while striking out one entry from the list for Sikkim. The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Second Amendment) Bill,2012,modifies the list of STs in Chhattisgarh and Kerala.
