Parrikar hits back: Does Tejpal accept he is a Cong stooge?

I am not taking any additional interest in the case, said Parekar.

Dismissing Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal’s allegations that the BJP government in the state had “unleashed… wrath of vengeance” against him,Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday retorted,“Does Tejpal accept that he is a Congress stooge? Is he a Congress man? Let him accept that first.”

Addressing a press conference here,he said,“I am not taking any additional interest in the case. The incident has not been done by the BJP government. After the incident, the email was not sent by the BJP government. The resignation letter for six months was not decided by the BJP government… He has himself admitted the crime.”

Referring to Tejpal’s email,Parrikar said,“When he (Tejpal) apologised,he didn’t realise… By the time he realised that he was falling into his own trap, his advisors… in his section, like you (media) said,Congress, must have told him,‘Arey tum phas raho ho’. I don’t have to take their names. There are four or five advocates there. They are experts, that is why the flip-flop may have happened,” he said.

Asked if a union minister has been putting pressure on the police,Parrikar said strict instructions have been issued to the investigating agency to avoid any such calls. “I am not aware of any,but neither will I permit such calls. I have asked the police not to take pressure from any quarter. Different people will have different views on this man and this case. If you ask Bangaru Laxman,he will obviously not like him as,rightly or wrongly,he has suffered,” he said.

Parrikar said that as the Chief Minister,he has to “ensure justice” for the victim if what she has alleged has “legal support”.

Asked about BJP leader Sushma Swaraj tweeting that a union minister was “shielding” Tejpal, the Chief Minister said she was free to comment but her views would not influence the state government.

He said the investigation “will take its own course” and the state government “does not intend to monitor… except to ask the police department for fast and speedy disposal of the case.”

Responding to questions on the state government’s sponsorship of Thinkfest,Parrikar said,“We took a view that the tourism department should support this event as many important people attend it… sponsorship was given which was a nominal amount”.

On the future of the event,he said the government will not stop it from being held in Goa. “But who would like to be associated with a person who has such a serious charge against him?” said Parrikar.
