The district magistrate of Lakhimpur Kheri has refused to entertain an application sent by the parents of the 14-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered at the Nishagan police station premises seeking a CBI probe into the incident.
District Magistrate Samir Verma said he cannot accept an application bearing thumb impressions,submitted by people other than the girls parents.
How can a plain paper carrying thumb impressions and signatures of the victims parents,given through the representatives of the local MP,be treated as an authentic application? I visited Sonams parents Intezam Ali and Tarannum late in the evening,but they did not request for a CBI inquiry, Verma claimed.
Soon after Chief Minister Mayawati said she had no objection to a CBI inquiry into the murder if the family wanted,an application bearing the signatures and thumb impressions of her parents was submitted to Verma by local Congressmen.
Verma said he would not forward the application to the government as it was not handed over by the victims parents. Intezam Ali said he and his wife had signed an application after some politicians told him only a CBI inquiry can nail the killers.
Congress MP from Kheri Zafar Ali Naqvi,who is in Delhi,said his representative had collected the application from Sonams parents and handed it over to the DM around 2 pm. The DM had assured to forward the application to the government,he claimed.
Meanwhile,the two-member team of NHRC continued with its investigation and questioned the three suspended government doctors who had,in the first autopsy report,attributed Sonams death to asphyxia caused by hanging. The NHRC team is likely to complete its work and go back to Delhi on Thursday.
