Poscos 12 million tonne steel project in Orissas Jagatsinghpur district is now likely to be further delayed with a joint committee of Ministry of Environment and Forests and Ministry of Tribal Affairs reporting that any work related to the project in the area would be a violation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA).
The committee in its report has said that the central ministries should urge the Orissa government to first ensure proper implementation of the FRA that would settle the land rights of the people living there as laid down in the MoEFs July 2009 circular before forest land is acquired for the project. We have been informed that the district administration is proceeding with land acquisition and demolition of the paan (betel) cultivation of people on forest land. Our clear view is that such work is in violation of the Forest Rights Act, the committee said.
