Orissa on alert as cyclone threat looms

Special Relief Commissioner P K Mohapatra said the cyclonic system would intensify into a deep depression and further into a cyclonic storm

The Orissa government Tuesday put 14 of its 30 district collectors on alert following reports of depression over the north Andaman Sea about 1,350 km east-southeast of port of Paradip.

Special Relief Commissioner P K Mohapatra said the cyclonic system would intensify into a deep depression and further into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday. “Prediction as of now indicates that the system may have its landfall on Orissa coast on October 12,” he said. It was on October 29,1999 that a supercyclone had hit Orissa coast killing over 10,000 people.

Mohapatra said all 14 district collectors have been been advised to convene a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority to review the status of preparedness of all departments. The Bhubaneswar meteorological centre has advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal as the sea is likely to get very rough after two days. Mohapatra said the state may require the assistance of defence forces, especially the Indian Air Force, for rescue and relief.
