More than five years after he was charged with gross misconduct for helping his rapist son Bitihotra Mahanti jump parole, the Orissa government has exonerated former additional director general of police Bidya Bhushan Mahanti.
In an order last month, the home department said the inquiring officer had concluded that in the overall context of the entire gamut of circumstances, and though misconduct has been established,he deserves to be pardoned and has, therefore, recommended his exoneration from all charges. The exoneration will enable Mahanti to get his full pension: He has been drawing provisional pension since his retirement last year.
Orissa DGP Prakash Mishra, when asked about this, said he was unaware of Mahantis exoneration.
Mahantis son Bitihotra alias Bitti,22,was sentenced to seven years in prison on April 12 2006,less than a month after he was booked for raping a 26-year-old German tourist in a hotel in Alwar,Rajasthan. Bitti was released on a 15-day parole in November that year but went absconding for nearly seven years. He was arrested from Kerala in March this year.
In August 2007,the home department charged Mahanti with misconduct for going to Rajasthan the previous November to bail out his son without seeking permission from his superiors.
