Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Saturday said it was the duty of the organisation to protect women in the work place. The senior management of the company should follow the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court on how to tackle cases of sexual harassment in the work place, said Kumar during a seminar here.

Attending the seminar on “Women Empowerment” by the Merchant Chamber of Commerce, the Speaker said that she set up a grievance cell and inquiry committee to deal with complaints lodged by the women in the Parliament. Each organisation should constitute a committee to deal with sexual harassment cases.

In the Vishakha judgment, the Supreme Court had laid down guidelines for employers to deal with complaints of sexual harassment/assault at the workplace, and stipulated formation of committees to dispose complaints from victims. The SC verdict stated that all organisations form a complaints committee head-ed by a woman employee and not less than half of its members would be women.

The committee is to advise the victim on further course of action and recommend the course of action to the the management.
