The Orissa Assembly had to be adjourned several times Saturday as opposition members insisted on the arrest of former state law minister Raghunath Mohanty over his daughter-in-law lodging a case of dowry torture against him and his family members.

Meanwhile,Mohanty and his family members continued to be untraceable as the victim demanded their arrest.

On Friday,Mohanty had to resign from the Naveen Patnaik cabinet after his daughter-in-law Barsa Swony Chaudhury lodged a case of dowry torture against him,his son, wife, daughter and son-in-law in a police station of Balasore district. Chaudhury, who had married the minister’s son Rajyashree in June last year,in her FIR alleged that her husband and mother-in-law used to physically torture her, demanding Rs 25 lakh and a Scorpio car.

Though the police have taken up the investigation of the case,Congress alleged in the Assembly that the case was being derailed. “We demand Mohanty’s arrest immediately and wanted a discussion on the issue in the House. But the Speaker refused to allow,” said Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh.

Demanding Mohanty’s arrest, several rallies and demonstrations were organised by the Congress,BJP and Leftist student organisations in Bhubaneswar,Cuttack and Balasore district Saturday.
