The Northern Railway on Thursday announced 23 new trains,including a new Shatabdi Express and two new Duronto Express. All the new trains will begin operations within this year.
A new timetable for the year 2011-12 was also announced with changes in the departure of six trains and arrival of 10 others. The changes will come into effect from July 1.
The new Duronto trains will run twice-a-week between Delhi and Mumbai and Delhi and Ajmer. While the Mumbai Duronto will leave from New Delhi railway station and the Ajmer Duronto will leave from Hazrat Nizamuddin station. The new Shatabdi Express will run daily between New Delhi and Ludhiana.
S K Budhalakoti,General Manager of Northern Railway,also announced a new double-decker train between Delhi and Jaipur. It will start by the end of this financial year. Since it is a new kind of train,extensive trials are in the process and we are awaiting clearance from the Commissioner Railway Safety after which we will announce the date for its launch.
Budhalakoti said that there was a 12 per cent decline in railway accidents during the past one year.
There was no incident of train collision even though for a month-and-a-half the region experienced dense fog, the General Manager said.
