He was expected to pack a punch this election, but today at least DMDK founder Vijayakant was left defending a few blows he allegedly landed on own candidate.

In an incident now playing out repeatedly on rival channels,Vijayakant reportedly beat up DMDK candidate A Bhaskar, while campaigning for him on Tuesday evening.

Without confirming or denying whether it was Bhaskar who got beaten,Vijayakant justified his actions saying he had only hit own partyman. Besides,he said, those who got beaten by him went on to become Maharajas. Bhaskar himself denied it was he who was at the receiving end of the actor’s ire.

The footage shows Vijayakant, standing inside the campaign van, hitting a person on the back of his head at least thrice, the reason for which is not immediately clear. Those close to the actor said he was irked with the technical staff for not rectifying a problem with the wireless mike despite being specifically told to do so at an earlier stop. When he picked up the mike to speak,it was not functioning properly again, which sent Vijayakant into a fit of rage. He reportedly then threw the mike inside the van and hit the person next to him.

However, rivals alleged that Vijayakant lost his cool when Bhaskar tried to correct his leader. As per the sequence of events on the visuals aired by television channels from the ruling DMK coalition stable,Vijayakant beat up Bhaskar when he rose from within the campaign vehicle to correct his leader for introducing him wrongly as Pandian.

The incident was instantaneously picked up by television channels, including Kalaignar TV of the DMK,Makkal TV of the PMK and Sun TV of the Marans.

The actor’s critics have also dubbed the incident as typical of Vijayakant, who is known for his mercurial nature and impulsive actions. For instance, while campaigning for his candidates during the last general elections,he had promised his party men would work for the public, failing which he himself would thrash them.

As the issue got bigger in Tamil Nadu with each telecast, the footage was put up online as well, leading Vijayakant to retort at a campaign meeting: “My cadres know me. If there is something wrong,Vijayakant does question it. Those who get beaten by me become Maharaja in future.”

Bhaskar accused rival channels of spreading false news. Standing by the story of the faulty mike,he claimed he was seated inside the campaign van when the incident took place.
