Omar lashes out, says peace not permanent

Pressing the Centre for resolution of “basic political issues” of Kashmir,J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah

Pressing the Centre for resolution of “basic political issues” of Kashmir,J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday called the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru a “provocation” from New Delhi and said that peace in the Valley was not permanent.

“Some friends in New Delhi have developed a misconception and assume that peace in Kashmir is permanent,” the CM said, addressing a rally at Charar-e-Sharief in central Kashmir. “Though people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Valley, have always chosen peace over disturbance, you cannot take them for granted forever. Permanent peace is proportional to the resolution of basic political issues.”

Omar went on to take a dig at “those sitting in Delhi and considering that participation of people in panchayat elections, qualifying in the IAS or selection of a local youth in the Indian cricket team have solved basic political issues”.

His statement came less than a fortnight after UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi called the impressive participation in the panchayat elections in the state a sign that people were tired of bloodshed.

“This kind of mindset is unfortunate and untrue,” Omar said.

The CM added: “People in Kashmir may exhibit restraint and patience over provocations like hanging of Afzal Guru without informing his family, killing of two innocent youths in Markundal recently…,for which I salute them, but that does not mean their patience can always be taken for granted.”
