Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday apologised to the family members of Sanaullah Ranjay who was attacked by an inmate at Kotbalwal jail last week and died in a hospital at Chandigarh.

“Although it is scant consolation I like to offer sincere apology to the family of Sanaullah Haq and my sympathies for their loss,’’ Omar wrote on twitter soon after television channels started flashing news about Sanaullah’s death. “While the inquiry will fix responsibility for any dereliction of duty the fact that this happening at all is a matter of great regret,’’ Omar said.

He also expressed his gratitude to the doctors who tried saving Sanaullah’s life. “I’d also like to add a word of thanks to the doctors and staff at GMC Jammu & PGI Chandigarh for their valiant efforts to save Sanaullah,” the CM said.

Meanwhile,Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani termed the attack on Sanaullah a revenge. “It was a well thought out revenge executed inside Jammu jail. The government should register a murder case against Jail Superintendent Rajni Seghal,’’ he said. Geelani asked people to offer funeral in absentia for Sanaullah and hold peaceful protests across the Valley on Friday.
