In fresh trouble for jailed Congress MP and former chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Suresh Kalmadi, the CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry to probe alleged irregularities in the appointment of officials with hefty pay packages in the Organising Committee.

It was alleged that the Kalmadi-led OC favoured appointment of persons close to him and that the appointments were made flouting all rules and regulations. The CBI said that most of the appointments were directly made by Kalmadi and his aides who were in direct control of the management.

CBI sources said the PE was lodged against unknown persons in the OC after it received several complaints and references from the Central Vigilance Commission claiming violation of norms in the appointments. Officials said those who did not toe Kalmadi’s line were shown the door, leading to “favouritism” and “nepotism”.

In its PE,the CBI has alleged that in the period between 2003 to 2009,some persons with no expertise for various jobs were nominated to the OC. Sources said the agency would probe all the appointments of senior officials in the OC.

The Games organising body had an overall strength of about 2,100 officials engaged for various duties related to the mega sporting event. At present, there are about 100 officials on the rolls.

The CVC has also conducted a probe into the alleged recruitment scam following complaints that “ghost employees” were shown on the muster rolls and norms were violated while appointing officials. The high-level Shunglu Committee had also found irregularities in the recruitment procedures.
