Noida lesson: cm wary of angering farmers

The government has decided to go slow on investment proposals that will involve land acquisition from farmers,a lesson apparently learnt from the violent agitation in Noida. Bihar has already faced some resistance in getting the Navinagar power project through. The State Investment Promotion Board has approved over 140 investment proposals worth over Rs 1 lakh crore but most could fall through if farmers refuse to part with their land. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar says the government cannot use force for the sake of investment and it would rather buy time than go on the warpath against farmers. Bihar has got investment worth only around Rs 1,100 crore in the last five years but Nitish Kumar is optimistic that the New Industrial Incentive (Promotion) Policy,2011,will attract more.

Case against sadanand pits cong vs jd(U)

Former Bihar Speaker Sadanand Singh, under the Vigilance scanner over a 2003 Assembly recruitment scandal, sees in this a personal vendetta by the ruling JD(U). Singh, now the Congress MLA from Kahalgaon, has said that the JD(U) has framed him because he had turned down an offer to join the ruling party,an allegation dismissed by JD(U) state chief B N Singh. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has so far refrained from commenting on the matter. The state government has cited the Patna High Court’s instructions in filing the case, being investigated by the state Vigilance Bureau and monitored by the court. The Vigilance Bureau is not, however, expected to arrest Singh anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has demanded and additional 500 MW from the Centre; the existing allocation is 1,772 MW.

Govt bus service in Patna, city of autos

The Bihar government has finally started a ring bus service for Patna, where public transport depends largely on autorickshaws. The government has started 20 buses, each with 32 seats,on seven major routes in the first phase, with the number of buses to be increased to 70 soon. The transport department will add air-conditioned buses in the second phase. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said most metros have bus services and Patna residents too deserve one. The transport department has introduced fares of Rs 5 and Rs 10 to attract more passengers. A bus service had become vital with auto-rickshaw operators often going on strike and revising their fares.
